This year’s Super Bowl was filled with celebrations as the NFL deemed 60 years a milestone worthy of especially grand opening ceremonies. The ceremonies started at 5:00 PM CST with the singing of “Lift Ev’ry Voice and Sing” by Coco Jones. This was followed by a video similar to an ad that showed a photo booth-like memory box in which people recounted memories from Super Bowls past. After that showing, the same box was brought onto the field, and out of it stepped ex-Super Bowl MVPs!
After the memory box, popular punk rock band Green Day began a short set of some of their popular hits. They kicked their set off with the song “Good Riddance (Time of Your Life),” which was followed by a medley of “Holiday/Boulevard of Broken Dreams/American Idiot.” For their fourth and final song, they were joined on stage by the Super Bowl MVPs. Following Green Day’s shortened set, each of the playing teams were welcomed onto the field by a special celebrity fan. Jon Bon Jovi announced the Patriots, and Chris Pratt announced the Seahawks.
After the teams arrived, it was time for the singing of “America the Beautiful” and the national anthem. Famous rock singer Brandi Carlile performed “America the Beautiful.” This was followed by Charlie Puth’s rendition of “The Star-Spangled Banner.” At the end of his performance, the videographer captured a legendary shot of the flyover. The aircraft used in the flyover this year were two B-1 Lancers from the Air Force, two F-15C Eagles from the National Guard, two F/A-18E Super Hornets, and two F-35C Lightning II, both from the Navy.
The opening ceremonies were rounded out by a routine coin flip. This year’s coin toss was done using a special restrike of the 1776 Libertas Americana Medal. The medal was commissioned by Benjamin Franklin to commemorate the American Revolution. The restrike follows a similar pattern but has slight changes to use the team’s colors and logos on one side of the coin and the NFL logo on the other.
