A new sports animated show for 2026 is The GOAT, and it’s created by Sony Pictures Animation Studios. GOAT launched to about $50.6 million over its opening weekend, with $15.6 million overseas at the Box office. I have a pretty high expectation for the GOAT movie due to Sony having multiple animated show projects, such as Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, and K-pop Demon Hunter.
The movie title stands for the Greatest Of All Time. Our protagonist, named Will Harris, is introduced as a goat living in a world of unique animals urban setting. He struggles financially and works as a delivery boy for a diner, where his mom used to work. Although he is in a difficult position, he continues to practice his skill in roarball for his dream team, Vineland Thorns. However, his disadvantage as a goat were he was small compared to other mammals in a game similar to basketball.
One eventful day, he competed against one of the strong roarball players from Lava Coast Magma, and to his advantage, brought recognition to him; it depended on him how he would use the opportunities.
The plot of the movie and the world follow to similar formula for a kid movie, but with a different twist, such as the main character doesn’t relate to anyone famous, and there is a financial struggle. A lot of mammals, including his teamate underestimate the potential of the protagonist and wouldn’t expect him to play or survive in Roarball due to his size, but he had a community to believe in his dream. The movie actually spends time on character development and communication, especially Jett Filmore, who initially despises him and is afraid of being forgotten. With his pioneering, he brought the team to a higher potential.
The characteristics of our protagonist were refreshing because he was being portrayed as a realistic teenager, full of ambition, in a realistic world. He is aware of his financial situation and his size, making it difficult to get some recognition from the Thorns and become a player like his inspirational figure, Jett Filmore. His dream was motivated, no matter the difficulties, because of his mother’s hard work, care, and believing for his son.
Another thing I wanna mention is that you could see multiple brands in the movie being mentioned, such as cars, especially their own company, PlayStation.
In my opinion, the movie was amazing for a kid movie, and the movie’s animation was incredible, with a unique world-building similar to how other Sony projects are. The character design is simple and easy to understand for the character’s personality. The movie is less conflicted than any other Sony project. I’m excited to say that Sony did it again of how amazing an animated movie can be. I recommend that anyone watch the movie, even if they are old, but it’s an entertaining movie.
