Shohei Ohtani became the first member of the fifty fifty club on September 19th. The fifty fifty club is representative of his fifty home runs and fifty bases stolen in one season, an impressive feat either one in and of itself. Few players even come close to reaching this with the closest being Atlanta Braves Ronald Acuna Jr. he stole 73 bases and hit 41 home runs in 2023. The game that Ohtani reached the milestone was against the Miami Marlins and this is just another point in his storied season with the LA Dodgers. He has carried the team to the playoffs and outperformed everyone’s expectations as a batter. The Dodgers secured their playoff spot with the 20-4 win over the Merlins and it will be Ohtani’s first postseason appearance after missing out of the first six seasons with the team.
The two time american league MVP has had a remarkable season even though he has been kept off of the mound due to a wrist injury. He hopes to be healthy enough to return during the playoffs. And even though he has had no pitching he still has a huge chance to get MVP again with such high stats securing the team crucial wins.
The ball that gave Ohtani his home run is valued right around 1/700th of his contract for 700 million dollars. Auctions are even reaching upwards of 1.5 million dollars for the ball as a piece of baseball history. Just the precedent alone gives the ball value as the first person to break fifty runs and fifty steals ever. Ohtani should be proud of what he has done and he has said that he will cherish this forever. Hopefully he heals up for the playoffs so he can pitch and will continue to have a great season.
