The first half of 2024 has been pretty good with its movie releases, from blockbuster sequels like Dune: Part 2, Inside Out 2, and Deadpool & Wolverine, to sleeper hits like Challengers and LongLegs. But what’s on the lookout for the rest of 2024?
Beetlejuice Beetlejuice
Visionary director Tim Burton is back with another installment in the Beetlejuice series! After 36 years, Beetlejuice (Michael Keaton) returns to terrorize the world of the living once again, this time helping Lydia Deetz (Winona Ryder) save her daughter (Jenna Ortega) from the afterlife. Beetlejuice Beetlejuice releases on September 6th and is rated PG-13.
Transformers One
After almost 20 years of Michael Bay live-action Transformers movies, we get a new take on the Transformers as a new animated film comes to cinemas. The movie will show us the origins of the famous transformers we know and love, who are all voiced by a star-studded cast, including Optimus Prime (played by Chris Hemsworth) Bumblebee (Keegan Michael Key), and even Megatron (Brian Tyree Henry). Transformers One releases on September 20th and is rated PG.
Megalopolis
From Francis Ford Coppola, the director of The Godfather, Apocalypse Now, The Outsiders, and so many more amazing films comes a new epic sci-fi drama about a destroyed Metropolis being rebuilt as a Utopia. The director has been working on this movie for almost 50 years, and the wait is finally almost over, so it’s time to get excited! Megalopolis releases on September 27th and is rated R.
Joker 2
The sequel to one of the highest-grossing R-rated movies, Joker 2 follows Arthur Peck (Joaquin Phoenix) as he meets therapist Harleen Quinzel (Lady Gaga) in Gotham City’s Arkham Asylum. Madness and evil are sure to transpire with this deadly combination. Joker 2 releases on October 4th and is rated R.
Terrifier 3
The threequel to two of the most gruesome and terrifying (get it?) horror movies of the last decade. The infamous “Art The Clown” takes his horror movie antics where one would least expect, Christmas. Terrifier 3 releases on October 11th, and it is not yet rated (but expect a heavy R rating with this one.)
Venom: The Last Dance
After appearing in the post-credits scene of Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021) Tom Hardy is back as Eddie Brock/Venom for the final time, this time on the run from the military. Starring alongside Hardy is Marvel alumni Chiwetel Ejiofor, Ted Lasso’s Juno Temple, and many more. Venom: The Last Dance releases on October 25th and is not yet rated.
Red One
After Santa (J.K. Simmons) is kidnapped, Dwayne Johnson (Moana, Jumanji) and Chris Evans (Avengers) must team up to save him in this new Christmas action movie. Also starring girlboss Lucy Liu (Kill Bill). Red One releases November 15th and is rated PG-13.
Gladiator 2
The highly anticipated sequel to the 2001 Best Picture winner by renowned director Ridley Scott (Alien, Blade Runner, The Martian) follows Lucius, a new gladiator who must fight to take back his home. The film stars Paul Mescal as Lucius and features headliners Denzel Washington and Pedro Pascal. Gladiator 2 releases on November 22nd and is not yet rated.
Wicked
The hit Broadway musical comes to the bring screen starring Ariana Grande, and Cynthia Erivo, and directed by Jon M. Chu (In The Heights, Crazy Rich Asians). Taking place years before the events of The Wizard of Oz, this movie-musical tells the origin of friends turned enemies Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West, and Glinda the Good Witch. Wicked releases on November 22nd and is not yet rated.
Kraven The Hunter
Set in the Sony-Marvel universe, Aaron Taylor Johnson plays the famous Spider-Man villain Kraven the Hunter in this upcoming origin story comic book film. Oscar award winner Russel Crowe also plays the father of Kraven. Kraven The Hunter releases on December 13th and is not yet rated.
Sonic 3
Jim Carrey, Ben Schwartz, and James Marsden return for another chapter in the Sega video game turned movie franchise, this time with Sonic being hunted by the mysterious Shadow the Hedgehog (played by the always amazing Keanu Reeves). Sonic 3 releases on December 20th is not yet rated.
Mufasa: The Lion King
A prequel to the 2019 The Lion King remake, it will tell the tale of a young Mufasa meeting his adoptive brother Scar, and his journey to becoming the titular Lion King. This film will also feature brand new songs by world-famous Lin Manuel Miranda. Mufasa releases on December 20th and is not yet rated.
