There’s so much information circulating about the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump. But not all of it is true. Let’s hone in on the facts of the situation.
The attempt took place on July 13th, 2024, at a rally held by Trump in Butler, Pennsylvania. The shooter was one Thomas Matthew Crooks, a 20-year-old who was a registered Republican voter, but who had also once made a small donation to a progressive group, and who was immediately shot dead by a Secret Service counter-sniper.
He used an AR-style rifle that was legally purchased by his father years before the event and ammunition that he bought himself on the day of the rally. The gun had a collapsible stock, which may have enabled him to hide the weapon from security and local law enforcement.
Crooks used the rooftop of a plastics and glass company roughly 450 feet away from the stage as a vantage point to fire eight shots into the crowd, killing 50-year-old Corey Comperatore and injuring 57-year-old David Dutch and 74-year-old James Copenhaver. Dutch and Copenahver have since been discharged from the hospital. Trump, according to a statement released by his campaign a week after the attempt, was struck on the top of his right ear, producing a two-centimeter wound. He was later seen wearing a large white bandage over that ear but has appeared to fully recover.
A motive has yet to be determined by law enforcement, and it is believed that Crooks was working alone.
