Dune: Part 2 Review

Dune%3A+Part+2+Review

**DISCLAIMER: This article contains some mild SPOILERS for the movie***

Dune Two is incredible. There is no other way to put it, from the cinematography to the story and the action it has it all. It also follows the books very closely, straying only with subplots and keeping the original theme of Paul’s story with the Fremen and becoming the Emperor. The movie picks up right around the same place that the first movie ended, with Paul joining the Fremen and defeating Jamis. It gives you some context on the Harkonnens and the Emperor and their plans for the rest of the movie as well. This is something that the director did very well as he incorporated a lot of stuff from the second book into the movie as well to set up for a third movie to wrap up the series. This is fine since the first and second books of Dune are the main story afterward things start to get weird and it really should just be the first two books.

The movie also does great as a continuation of the first with the viewer only needing the major details in order to understand the plot. But the movie also has a lot of subplots with the Bene Gesserit and how they orchestrate the whole universe the story takes place. A lot can be lost with the absence of the inner monologuing from the book, but the movie makes up for this with dramatic reveals about how things work and moving quickly through the story so the viewer doesn’t get too lost overthinking something with less context.

One frustrating thing was sometimes it was hard to understand what the characters were saying. I think that if there had been subtitles I would have enjoyed the movie more as certain parts were a bit unclear on what exactly they were talking about. They also skipped over some things that may have given the movie a bit more flow. For example in one part in the middle, they are raiding Harkonnen bases on Arrakis but it is unclear sometimes when they are doing them or the sense of time in between as frequent cuts are made to the Harkonnens or the Emperor reacting to these.

But regardless the movie was amazing! As part two in a three-part series, it had a ton of action and left me wanting more story but also satisfied with all that they accomplished in the film. They are already working on Dune part three and I cannot wait for it to come out because if it’s anything like the other two it should be a spectacular film.
