My brother and I went to watch the movie out of curiosity because we wondered if the movie was going to be the same as the original movie. Immediately, the movie became one of the top 10 most wasteful movies I’ve ever seen.
For a summary, How to Train Your Dragon is a movie that takes place during the Viking era, showing the struggle between Vikings and dragons for survival. A teenage boy named Hiccup, is the son of Stoick the Vast, the chief of his homeland Berk. The village had been struggling with food and survival for the next winter; they all looked down on Hiccup due to his being a nepo baby. Everything changes for him after he encounters the most dangerous dragon: the Night Fury.
I want to say one thing: every animation studio corporation should never make a live-action movie of the source material. In my opinion, every live action movie is always a scam version of the animated film. The live movie makes the dragon too realistic in the most unnecessary way, where the attention is focused on other parts of the dragon’s body instead of the eyes; Eyes are always one of the techniques that animated movies use to show the viewer the depth of emotion of the character.
The script is exactly what the original movies had shown, but somehow the movie makes sure they make themselves original. All the scenes are different from the source. For example, during the montage of Toothless and Hiccup, Hiccup is trying to collaborate and help Toothless with his disability by using a new invention. In return, Toothless gets to learn some of the advantages of a non-violent method, or in other words, dominance. They change the scene where Toothless fails to fly normally, falling onto a patch of grass and acting like a cat who’s encountered catnip. Here, the live action switches the grass to dandelions. One frustrating moment is when they purposefully miss one of the scenes where Hiccup realizes dragons aren’t as fearless or monstrous as the Vikings assume them to be. At the end of the Hiccup and Toothless montage, Toothless celebrates survival from almost dying where they both went through the fire, come to the rest stop, and enjoy a pile of fish. One of the small, silly groups of dragons is hungry and comes toward them, wishing they could possibly gain some food. Toothless has reasonable selfishness in keeping the fish, so Hiccup gives them the food. This dragon shows the side that any vikings wouldn’t be able to see – the innocence.
In my opinion, the original film makes something captivating for children or families with its amazing voice acting, and the music increases the reputation of this iconic movie. The live action movie showed none of the spark like the original because some of the acting isn’t on the same level. The music is the same, but the transition is off, where it feels like jumping instead of appreciating the moment.
The movie has become one of the disappointing turns of events from Dreamworks, like making Puss in Boots: the Last Wish, by making a live-action version of this original. Dreamworks, I want to ask you how you could beat your opponent Disney when you’re dropping to the same level as them. I suggest all viewers go against watching this film, and instead watch the original movies.
