On January 20th the US swore in our new president Donald J. Trump and with him his sweeping new foreign affairs policy that helped him win office. During his run for office Trump repeatedly promised to deport immigrants and made more vague promises to take land and “Manifest Destiny”. He even in his inaugural address mentioned this phrase with his plans to rename the gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America.
However, it doesn’t end there. Trump has also floated the idea of buying or in some way taking Canada on social media and has voiced opinions on Greenland. Saying that there are many MAGA supporters there and that they would love to be Americans. This is convoluted with his other promises to bring down inflation and stop rising deficits which would require cutting spending in the military not engaging in more of it as he expands the U.S..
Other allies Trump has fought with is Taiwan. As the president looks to Chinese A.I and sees the US losing the race he believes that a tariff on the superconductor chip manufacturing giants TMC will help the U.S. grow its own chip plants in order to combat China in the race to better A.I. Though many tech companies are critical of this move and what it could mean for their businesses.
Whether Trump successfully expands the US or not he will most certainly try to quickly gain and acquire territory in order to increase his public approval and make sure that republicans and himself stay up. This combined with his promise to tariff all his allies makes them scared of the new administration and desperate to avoid his ire.
