December saw a new era for Fortnite. It brought 2 new seasons with it. Fortnite OG: Chapter 1, and Fortnite Chapter 6: Season 1: Hunters. But what are they? And are they any good?
Fortnites Sixth chapter (and 33rd season overall) has officially begun, moving away from the spies and Marvel heroes of the year and bringing Japanese culture to the Fortnite island. Chapter 6 relies on the concept of “Demon Hunters,” giving you the ability to eliminate actual bosses on the map (as opposed to the minibosses Fortnite has had previously, though they are still to be found). These bosses are very fun to combat with friends, and drop new loot, such as “Oni” Masks, which give players fun abilities, such as teleporting. The season also adds new movement actions, such as wall jumping, ledge leaping, and rolling lands. New movement additions make the gameplay much faster and make the flow very clean. Although, the battle pass this season is middling. Whereas previous seasons have relied on celebrities and pop culture icons as crutches, the new season only relies on one. Baymax. From Disney. Yeah. It makes the battle pass seem tame. Godzilla will be made available as a battle pass skin in early January. So that’s fun. In short, the new Fortnite season is very fast-paced and enjoyable. But what if you want something a bit different?
In 2023, Fortnite had its “Fortnite OG” Season. It was based on the spring-summer of 2018 of Fortnite. Many people considered 2018 one of the best eras of Fortnite, due to its simplicity and cultural relevance. But now, after a year of waiting for the immensely popular Gamemode to return, it’s back, and with a new coat of paint, and for good. But this time, it takes Fortnite back to basics. It goes back to Season 1, which was in 2017. Vintage weapons return, the concept of “double pumping” (quickly switching weapons to fire faster), long defunct traps, and scarce healing items make for a very grounded experience, and a not very fun one. I think the evolution of Fortnite has been mostly for the better, it had its growing pains in the late 2010s but then evolved into a very fun, fast-paced, builder shooter. But when it is taken to its original map with its original weapons and balancing, it is slow and unenjoyable. The original map was not very well organized, and large, empty plots of terrain scatter the map, making for a slow slog through long-forgotten locations. Famous locations such as “Tilted Towers” did not even appear until season 2, so you’ll have to wait another month for it to appear. Oh yeah, speaking of it, the Fortnite OG Gamemode will slowly move through Fortnite seasons every so often. It is still unconfirmed how long these seasons will last. But hopefully, it will quickly move from season to season to keep the users entertained. All in all, the new Fortnite OG Gamemode is a slow slog of a game, full of long abandoned and unfun mechanics, but hopefully, it will evolve out of it, as it once did, long ago.
