The Memorial Spartans finished a strong season with an impressive 8-1 record, their only loss coming in a tightly contested, 10-point game against the Verona Wildcats. In the playoffs, the Spartans won their Level One matchup against the Stevens Point Panthers, 33-21, but their season came to an end in Level Two with a 45-24 loss to the D.C. Everest Evergreens. Everest went on to beat Waunakee in Level Three and narrowly lost to Bayport in Level Four, with Bayport ultimately winning the State Championship.
Memorial had a very successful season overall, with several accomplishments across the regular season. The Spartan offense dominated in their first matchup with Milwaukee Riverside/Golda Meir, putting up over 60 points. The following week, VPM took down Waunakee, ranked in the top five at the time, beating them by two scores in a major upset. It was Waunakee’s first home non-conference loss in decades. Memorial also beat Middleton in a thrilling game that ended with a game-winning field goal by Ty Aparicio. The Spartans had not beaten the Cardinals in four years before that game.
In Week Four, the Spartans suffered their first loss to Verona in a defensive battle where the only touchdown was a strip sack on quarterback Owen Fiedler by the Wildcats’ defense. The last five games of the schedule were much easier, with VPM winning by at least four scores in each.
In their Level One playoff game, Memorial came out strong in the first half, and although Stevens Point looked like a different team in the second half, they ultimately lost by two scores. Level Two was where VPM finally faltered. D.C. Everest won handily and made a deep run, losing to the eventual state champion, Bayport.
