VPM’s Varsity Football squad has been fun to watch this year. The Spartans are 5-1 on the season, 3-1 in conference play, second to only Verona (the only loss so far) and are coming off a dominant Homecoming win over Madison East, 49-0.
It was smooth sailing in the beginning, with the offense putting up a whopping 61 points to Milwaukee Riverside/Golda Meir in the home opener. But the week two matchup was a whole new level. The Spartans took on Waunakee, ranked top-ten in the state at the time, with Marion Moore scoring in every way physically possible. He had a 74-yard touchdown catch, a 92-yard kickoff return for a score, and a 25-yard pick-six too. It was the first non-conference home loss for the Warriors in decades, and a big statement win for Memorial.
Week 3 brought another challenge, and rivalry: Middleton. Memorial’s Ty Aparicio kicked a game-winning, 21-yard field goal with just three seconds left to defeat the Cardinals in an electric, turnover-filled, back-and-forth game, with the Spartans defying the odds on the final drive to get into field goal range.
Unfortunately, those turnovers piled up in Week 4. Memorial couldn’t score against Verona, a yearly powerhouse, and lost 10-0. This game was truly a defensive battle, and the Spartans were able to limit Verona’s run game relatively well.
VPM went on to beat Madison West and East back-to-back, 36-13 and 49-0, respectively. They will face Craig in Janesville this weekend for their second consecutive Saturday morning game, at 11 AM. The last home game will be October 10th against Janesville Parker, and the final game of the regular season should be an easy one at Madison La Follette on the 18th. The Spartans have a good chance of entering the playoffs with a near-perfect record, so keep an eye on Memorial heading into the postseason.
