With the summer of 2024 coming to an end, pop stars like Chappell Roan and Sabrina Carpenter have dominated the music scene, with new albums and huge crowds at music festivals like Lollapalooza. As we look back, here are some of the most notable artists and moments from this year’s “brat” summer.
We can’t talk about this summer without mentioning Charli XCX–the singer and DJ known for her songs featured on the Fault in Our Stars and the 2023 Barbie movie–who released her album Brat in June. The album’s iconic lime green and black lettering is everywhere, from TikTok dances to the presidential election. When Charli XCX posted “kamala IS brat” on X, supporters of Vice President Kamala Harris leaned into the meme and rebranded her campaign to target Gen Z.
You’ve probably seen the viral videos of Chappell Roan’s unprecedented crowds at music festivals like Lollapalooza and the Governor’s Ball, on par with headliners like SZA and Megan Thee Stallion. As a relatively new singer in the industry, she’s garnered fans from across the world for her vibrant queer identity, dramatic costumes, and eye-catching stage presence. Her humble beginnings as an aspiring singer in the Midwest who started her career posting her singing on YouTube makes her success that much more special. She’s even your favorite artist’s favorite artist—confirmed by Sabrina Carpenter herself.
Speaking of Sabrina Carpenter, her viral songs “Espresso” and “Please Please Please” have billions of streams on Spotify and she just released a new album, Short n’ Sweet. Not to mention other artists like Olivia Rodrigo and Taylor Swift who are still on tour, and one of my favorite artists, Clairo, who released her album Charm earlier in July. Billie Eilish also recently collaborated with Charli XCX on her song Guess and came out with Hit Me Hard And Soft in May.
Regardless of your music taste, now is the time to look back at all the hits that our ears were blessed with this summer, as one day these songs will be summer of 2024 nostalgia. So enjoy your last few days of summer with your headphones in ear, because these songs will soon become fond memories!
