In light of Luka Dončić and Joel Embiid’s 73-point and 70-point games, let us instead take a look at some of the lowlights of the 2023-24 NBA season. The 2023-24 Detroit Pistons made history by setting the record for the longest losing streak in NBA history at 28 games, tying the 2014-15 Philadelphia 76ers. While the Pistons managed to snap the losing streak before becoming the sole losing streak titleholder, the feat made us wonder: what are some of the longest losing streaks in sports history?
In the football world, the most recent notable losing streak was by the Jacksonville Jaguars, who lost all final 15 games of the season in 2020 and tallied an 0-5 start in 2021 to record a 20-game losing streak, the longest in the modern era. However, even before the NFL became its own thing, the actual record for the longest losing streak in American football history is associated with the Chicago Cardinals, who went on a 29-game losing streak, including two winless 0-10 seasons between 1942 and 1945.
Going from endzone to bases, the MLB has also seen its share of losing streaks, most notably the 1975 Detroit Tigers who went on a 19 game losing streak. The 1975 Tigers campaign actually had a start with a 9-game winning streak. But things began to derail midway through the season with the historic losing streak, as the close to .500 Tigers finished 57-102. The Kansas City Royals rallied in the same number of consecutive losses in their 2005 campaign, which was only a part of their three 100+ losses seasons between 2005 and 2007. But perhaps the worst losing streak was by the Louisville Cardinals in 1889. By recording 26 straight losses, the Cardinals finished 27-111 (0.196 winning %), the third worst single-season winning percentage in baseball history.
