Near the end of November, Sam Altman the CEO of OpenAI was fired. The board of directors fired him after he went on stage and talked about his future plans for the company. He talked about the latest advances and ways to make money with OpenAI. But people are very speculative about how AI and money should be put together like one of the board members Ilya Sutskever. He’s a skeptical man who above all else wants to prevent the AI from taking over and keep it in check. One of the ways that he thinks this will happen is if it becomes monetized, adapted and changed, integrating into every part of our lives. Sam on the other hand wants to rush ahead and bring about a new age of AI where it helps us with everything. So when Sam announces plans to move forward with AI without telling the board, supposedly, they freak out and fire him in response to this because they believe he is moving too fast. Other board members like Toner already disagree with him from a technological standpoint. This creates an environment in which Sam gets fired with his chief engineer. But all is not lost for Sam as Microsoft’s CEO really likes Sam. He has poured millions of dollars into Open AI as they state 100x returns on investment for their investors and is furious that he is gone without any consultation. He rehires Sam to Microsoft and all the employees at Open AI are mad and leave for Microsoft. Now Sam has leverage and he uses this to get a meeting with the board of directors where he negotiates to come back if they all leave. They say no but soon realize that there is no real way out of this as with Sam gone all the employees left and their stock price plummeting they have to rehire Sam even if they all leave. So Sam gets hired back and all the workers come back to the company. Then he fires three of the board members, hires two more and MIcrosoft’s CEO is an observing member on the board. The big takeaway from all of this is that while Sam is not a typical founder in that he has stock majority he clearly has control and some sway in the company and it is definitely altamish whether he wants it to be or not.
Finally with all of that drama one thing has come from it, a major turning point in AI use. We are now out of the age of exploration with AI as people have seen how chatGTP works and other forms of AI art and media. Now people are starting to go and say we can make money here. This has led to lots of growth in the industry and a hands off approach to AI. As before progress was slow with the development of chat GTP and other forms of AI. Cautiously developed with people in mind, now we are seeing major moves to ramp up development. China has announced that it is going to start developing AI and wants a 50% computing boat for their country. Along with this many other industries and countries are diving into AI and looking to improve their wealth and stability.
So say goodbye to AI being used for recreational purposes strictly as it could soon be implemented on a larger scale into our everyday lives. For better or for worse.
