In 2020 Madison voters approved a referendum for public funding of renovations to the five MMSD high schools. Construction on Memorial began in May of 2022 and it will continue through this year and is estimated to be finished right before the 2024-2025 school year starts.
Minor annoyances and distractions like noise from power tools, the fire alarm accidentally going off, and ladders and boxes in the middle of the hall can be disruptive to learning and getting from class to class. In addition, some classrooms are incomplete, whether it is missing ceiling tiles or plain white walls. Despite all the annoyances, there is a lot of construction that has been completed and much to look forward to in the coming months.
The tech ed and art areas are completed and are now connected to the main building. The renovated spaces are much larger and have more space to work and create. In addition, some of the science classes were expanded and redone with larger workspaces. The music wing was remodeled and expanded. It was finished last spring and the classes using the space have been able to use them to their full advantage. On a similar note, the auditorium is slated to be completed before fall concerts and performances in mid-October. Construction continues on the locker rooms. The construction has been so extensive that they even replaced the previous grass field at Manfield Stadium with a new artificial turf, however, the track surface has yet to be completed.
