Earlier this summer, the Golden State Warriors and Boston Celtics matched up in the NBA Finals. It was the Warriors’ sixth Finals appearance in the last eight years. The much-younger Celtics made their first trip to the Finals since 2010. Millions of people tuned in to watch an experienced championship team led by Stephen Curry go head-to-head with an explosive, talented roster centered around Jayson Tatum. The matchup was as close to fifty-fifty as is possible in the NBA, but the Warriors prevailed in six games. Stephen Curry took home the honors of Finals MVP: the only box left to check in an otherwise hall-of-fame-worthy career.

Because Golden State had a better record during the regular season, the series started with two games in San Francisco. The Warriors got off to a fast start thanks to a three-point barrage from Stephen Curry. Just when it seemed that the Warriors had the game under control, the Celtics stormed back and made a huge fourth-quarter run to steal Game 1. Many people were surprised to see Golden State lose at home, but the Warriors quickly returned to form by crushing the Celtics by nearly 20 points in Game 2.

The series then moved to Boston for Games 3 and 4. The Celtics’ big three– Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown, and Marcus Smart – exploded for a combined 77 points to propel their team to victory in Game 3. Down two-to-one on the road, the Warriors were in an uncomfortable position. But Stephen Curry looked more than comfortable in Game 4, dropping 43 points and grabbing 10 boards. Curry was less impressive in Game 5, but teammate Andrew Wiggins stepped forward to score 26 points and lead the Warriors to another victory. One win away from another NBA title, the Warriors traveled back to Boston for Game 6. Once again Stephen Curry was electric, scoring 34 points and hitting six threes to lead his team to victory. It was the fourth NBA championship for Curry and the seventh for the Warriors franchise. Because of his dominant performances, Curry was awarded Finals MVP, silencing critics who pointed to the missing honor as the only blemish on an otherwise legendary résumé.
