Smosh Summer Games came back with a bang! Smosh, a sketch comedy Youtube channel founded in 2005 by Ian Hecox and Anthony Padilla, produced a summer games series from 2015-2019. Before that, in its earliest days, it was just the two creators filming funny skits in their homes and posting them for a small Youtube audience. But soon Smosh grew into a million-subscriber channel as they gained new members to act in their skits, including Olivia, Keith, Noah, Courtney, and Shayne. As a core group, these 5 new members filmed fun group videos in a less scripted format, doing challenges and silly activities. As Smosh became a real company, they were sold to Defy Media in 2011 for a presumably good reason, as it promised an increase in viewership and funded content. But as they hired new members, with older members leaving just as fast, Defy-owned Smosh became a hostile environment. Their directors were verbally abusive, and Defy staff made the cast and crew of Smosh continuously uncomfortable. In general, their management was unsustainable.
With painful and crazy challenges that harmed the cast in the name of content, Smosh Summer Games was birthed in 2015. Essentially a week of creative and unique content based on a specific theme, it was a summer-fun focused series separate from the rest of their sketch-based content. But eventually, Defy Media shut down in 2018, leaving Smosh behind in the dust.
With one member lost (Anthony had left the company a year prior), Smosh was sent into a period of confusion and disarray. But there is always a light at the end of the tunnel! And the light, in this case, was none other than Rhett and Link. In 2023, Ian sold Smosh to Mythical Entertainment, another comedy Youtube channel from the early days. Since Mythical Entertainment came down and swept Ian up into their loving arms, Smosh has only been on an upward trajectory, with Anthony returning to the company that same year. Smosh gained new members including Amanda, Chanse, Tommy, Angela, Arasha, and Trevor, causing their viewership to skyrocket and bring in a wide new audience. Leaving Smosh Summer Games in the past, Smosh shifted and changed into a new improv-based comedy channel with extremely funny members and a huge online fanbase and internet presence.
But 2019 was not the last we would see of the games. This past August, the channel released none other than a Smosh Summer Games trailer: Class of 2005. The theme was, of course, Smosh’s 20-year-anniversary, and included exciting characteristics of the mid-2000’s. Old fans were in absolute shock, new fans were just as excited, and everyone was ready to see how a brand new cast, company, and humor would fulfill the great returning title. The games started off with a bang, with the cast doing physical challenges that did not inflict any pain on them – unlike Defy Media. Throughout the week, they uploaded a total of 12 videos, including a podcast episode, a game show episode, and a Reddit story episode. The rest of the releases were them playing games. As fans watched the variety of new content, they were satisfied by the new version of Smosh filling its old shoes in the best and funniest way possible.
