Hatsune Miku. Social phenomenon, pop icon, virtual. These are all words you could use to describe this internet sensation. For those of you who are not in the know, Hatsune Miku is a virtual music artist also known as a Vocaloid. Miku has become quite famous around the world, with recognizable bright cyan pigtails.
The Brazilian Hatsune Miku trend began on August 17th, 2024 on Twitter (X). A user drew Miku but Brazilian, and then a revolution began. People of all different cultures and ethnicities drew Miku in their traditional garb and styles. Some notable Mikus included: Texan Miku, Filipino Miku, Garfield Miku, Palestinian Miku, Turkish Miku, Nigerian Miku, and other such drawings. My personal favorite is Pangea Miku, who is just a blob-like sea creature with a blue Miku “wig”. Incidentally, Twitter (X) was also recently banned in Brazil around the time Brazilian Miku became a trend. Many have theorized that Miku was the reason behind the ban, and perhaps she is. Who’s to say?
The cultural Miku has turned out to be a wonderful way to learn about other people’s traditions and lives. To be fair, she is Miku so this kind of thing is not that out of the ordinary for her.
