2022 Emmy Nominations
August 25, 2022
America’s biggest awards show for excellence in television and emerging media, the Emmys, released record nominations this July, while simultaneously being called out by many for its potential snubs. HBO’s Succession, a show chock-full of deliciously sardonic humor, telling the story of four siblings and their fight for the top in their family business empire, perhaps unsurprisingly dominated the drama category after earning a series of wins in 2020. Breaking the record for the drama series with the most acting nominations in a single year (25), Succession greatly helped HBO supersede Netflix for the second year in a row in the race for the largest number of nominations. Euphoria’s Zendaya (HBO) also secured a second nomination for Outstanding Actress in a Drama Series after becoming the youngest actor at 24 years old to ever win this award two years ago. Among another series of firsts, Squidgame (Netflix), a game-show style drama with deadly stakes, became the first non-English show to receive a nomination for Outstanding Drama Series, while Quinta Brunson (Abbott Elementary, ABC) became the youngest Black woman to be nominated for Outstanding Actress in a Comedy Series. Within the comedy genre, Ted Lasso (Apple TV), which follows soccer coach Ted and his attempt at managing a famous British football team, once again dominated the category with 20 Emmy nominations total. However, many critically acclaimed shows of the season, including Black-ish and Reservoir Dogs, were heavily overshadowed.
