A Timeless Performance — Les Misérables at Overture

“Les Misérables” is one of the most recognizable musical performances, and the national tour passing through Madison as a part of the Overture’s Broadway season didn’t disappoint.

With a complex plot rooted in the French Revolution, “Les Mis” follows Jean Valjean, a French peasant imprisoned after stealing a loaf of bread for his sister’s starving child. Once he runs away from prison, he seeks to start a new life. Encountering individuals like single mother Fantine, he devotes his life to caring for Fantine’s daughter Cosette.

The cast remained the highlight of the show. Randy Jeter excelled as Valjean, with a wide vocal range best exhibited in the song “Bring Him Home.” Though the innkeeper, Thénardier plays a supportive role, Matt Crowle stole the show with his portrayal of the character and his comical interpretation. As a whole, the ensemble carried the flow of the performance, capturing the audience with numbers like “One Day More” right before the intermission.

Behind the scenes, the crew and tech team worked to deliver a flawless setting. With a focus on special effects like a screen depicting water flowing, to showing the ragtag rebel group walking through the streets, the set and crew management created an immersive experience for the audience.

A 3-hour performance with a 15-minute intermission, however well portrayed, can be difficult for the audience. The 3 hours were packed with music, dialogue, and movement, but even with this length, some moments missed their landing as the momentum of the story was pushed.

The cohesive nature of the ensemble, the stunning costumes, and the breathtaking sets made this rendition of Les Mis a sight to behold. Directors Laurence Connor and James Powell masterfully crafted a performance living up to the timelessness of the musical.
