On the Eastern side, the Knicks easily cruised to a victory over the Cavaliers, pulling out the brooms in a playoff sweep. Meanwhile, the west came down to a battle of wills, a series of intense matchups that eventually led to the young, upstart San Antonio Spurs beating the reigning champs OKC Thunder in 7 games. This leaves us with the final matchup of Knicks vs. Spurs, a rematch of the 1999 finals that kicked off the Spurs dynasty of the early 2000’s. Today, we’ll review each team, and which team I believe will eventually win the NBA finals.

First, let’s start with the Knicks. The Knicks have consistently been one of the premier teams in the Eastern Conference over the past several years, following the acquisition of Jalen Brunson in free agency. The star point guard has consistently led a well constructed roster to 50+ win seasons since becoming a Knick in 2022, with the roster perennially being considered a contender in the East. However, the team has consistently been held out of the finals in that era, losing in the eastern conference semifinals the past two years, with both being in 7 games. This was the year the Knicks finally got over the hump, with an absolutely dominant playoff run that featured sweeps in both the conference semifinals and finals.

However, the Knicks haven’t yet run into a team like the San Antonio Spurs. Led by 7 ‘5 phenom center Victor Wembanyama, the Spurs are one of the youngest teams to ever reach the NBA finals. The team was primarily constructed in the past few seasons, composed primarily of recent draft acquisitions like Wembanya, Stephon Castle, and rookie Dylan Harper. The only “big acquisition” the Spurs have made in recent years outside of the draft is trading for DeAaron Fox from the Sacramento Kings in order to give Wembanyama a true running mate. While the Spurs have had to play far more playoff games than the Knicks, those games have also mostly come against tougher competition, with a tough 6 game series against Minnesota followed by a grueling 7 game series against MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and the Oklahoma City Thunder. However, San Antonio prevailed, led predominantly by Wembanyama’s herculean efforts on a nightly basis, as well as great team basketball all around.

So, who do I think will win the Finals? Well, both teams come with huge advantages. Because the Knicks swept the Cavaliers, their players have gotten a nice, well deserved break watching the Spurs play their hearts out night by night. This likely gives them an advantage simply in both energy and injuries. However, the Spurs both had a better regular season record, and have a frankly unguardable superstar cornerstone that will be difficult for the Knicks to defend, especially with center Mitchell Robinson’s status in question with a broken thumb. In the end, my final prediction is a Spurs victory in 6 games, marking the first of likely many championships to come in the career of Wembanyama.

The NBA Eastern and Western Conference Finals featured two drastically different series.
