Obviously, starting the week knowing you would get to go home early was relieving, but I’m probably alone on this; I never had the Monday schedule memorized, even a little bit. I had no clue when a single class started or ended on an early-release Monday.

Not that it’s exceedingly difficult to memorize two slightly different school schedules, it was just a pain. So when I heard we were ditching early release Mondays, I was very unaffected. I’d trade them away for the frequent 3-day weekends anytime. 3-day weekends are, to me at least, the equivalent of a beautiful, shady spring in the middle of the desert. 3-day weekends give everyone an extra breather, an extra day to relax, or an extra day to catch up on school. I knew we’d be losing early release Mondays for a 3-day weekend this year, but another con, one which is much more significant than early release Mondays, is how late we go into June.

There are many Wisconsin schools out on summer break right now! It’s nice to be able to relax for all of August, but being in school nearing mid-June is awful. DOLS take place in the second week of June, and in the first week of June, I have staff training for summer camp. Going as late as we do into June is more detrimental to people who work at camps, as I do. By the time the memorial is done with DOL, I’ll be halfway through mini-week. I can’t imagine the staff is too happy about it either. Some teachers teach summer school and coach summer sports, but for all the staff that have kids who are already out of school that they’re eager to spend time with, I’d say we’re all in agreement. It sucks.

3-day weekends. Worth the extra school days? Worth the no early release Mondays?
