The results aren’t meant to be too serious, and the end goal is not only to determine who will lead a club in the future but also to simulate the process of a democratic election for students. However, this year’s Spartan Youth Service election didn’t go as planned, and the club ended up having to redo the vote to ensure fairness.

After the initial round of executive elections, where club members voted through a Google Form ballot listing options for presidents, vice presidents, treasurer, secretaries, and communications officers, results were posted a week later on Google Classroom. However, when SYS presidents looked through the Google Form submissions, we found that some emails submitted duplicate votes. When we deleted the duplicate votes, the results remained the same, so the presidents went ahead and posted the results for the executive elections.

But after consulting with the SYS advisors, the advisors decided that the duplicate voting made the election unfair, and held an in-person re-vote using paper ballots. Students came into the advisors’ classrooms and the Wisconsin Study Hall, SYS’s meeting room, to fill out the paper ballots. These paper ballots not only included a re-vote for the executive board but also the freshman, sophomore, junior, and senior committee co-chairs.

Some may believe that the re-vote was unnecessary, or that the paper ballot voting, which happened during AP testing, was a barrier to voting access.
