On March 28, thousands gathered in Madison and across the nation to protest President Donald Trump and his administration. This protest, organized under the name of \u201cNo Kings,\u201d was the third of its kind in under a year. The Madison Police Department estimated around 9,000 protesters in a Facebook post. Around 100 demonstrations took place around Wisconsin. An estimated 8 million people came out for the protests across the United States.<\/p>\n
The protesters gathered first at Brittingham Park, on the western shore of Lake Monona, before marching to the State Capitol. Once there, a multitude of speakers came up to deliver speeches. When I arrived, one speaker was just finishing. Next, Ajak Johnson, the chief of staff for the American Progressive Party, spoke for around 23 minutes. After Jackson, the Rev. Everett Mitchell, a judge and preacher, came up and spoke about his recent experiences in the United Arab Emirates, where he was stranded for some time after the attacks on Iran by the United States on February 28. He described how he was not able to return to the U.S. due to the destruction of airports and the shutdown of airspace in the Middle East. Mitchell recounted how the U.S. government did not take major actions to help him and other Americans return to the U.S.<\/p>\n
He later spoke about the 16th Street Baptist Church, where four Black girls were killed by a bomb planted by the Ku Klux Klan. Mitchell then compared the attack and the culture that led to the attack to the U.S. strike on a girls school in Iran, which led to the deaths of around 150 students, listing names of some of the children killed in the attack.<\/p>\n
The demonstration, like the previous editions, did not have one specific goal, but rather was a manifestation of anger with the current administration. A number of signs protested the war with Iran, with one reading, \u201cNo Wars, No Kings.\u201d<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
