Pretty quickly, trailers were released, and press tours were underway. What I was paying attention to, though, was the lack of Stanley Tucci.

He was a pretty major character in the first movie, and trailers have implied that he’s similarly featured, if not more so. But it’s almost impossible to find an interview with him or more than 5 clips of him from any of the many trailers.

Stanley Tucci is being underutilized, but this is far from the first time. This issue spans decades, making sure that Stanley Tucci is never properly appreciated.

Throughout his career, Stanley Tucci has been in over 170 movies and TV shows, meaning you’ve likely seen one of them. In almost all of them, he doesn’t play the main character. Instead, he usually plays a supporting or background role. This is fine, plenty of amazing actors play supporting roles. The issue is that it primes people to ignore him.

Sure, he’s been in a ton of movies, but can you picture Stanley Tucci right now, in your mind? If you saw Stanley Tucci walking down the street, would you recognize him? More likely than not, most people who saw Stanley Tucci in public would think he was a random bald guy.

It’s easy to think the problem is that he’s not famous enough to gain wider recognition, but people recognize weirder, less deserving celebrities all the time! In a world where Jeremy Renner, the most semi-decent actor in the MCU, is famous enough to start his own app, you would think that there would be at least a few Stanley Tucci superfans.

He’s even popular enough to have his own show! Tucci in Italy is decently popular, even though it sometimes feels like it’s made with only women over forty who are a little too into wine. The fact that a show about tasting food in which the first food they ever taste is made of the fourth stomach of a cow is kind of crazy. If he were unpopular, it would probably have been cancelled after the first season. However, the show was renewed for a second season! For some reason, people want to see more of Stanley Tucci doing nothing but trying weird food and randomly saying one word in Italian to remind people that he is actually Italian. It’s pretty much impossible to want to see that while not liking the guy doing it.

Clearly, people do actually like Stanley Tucci. So what gives? Why is he never being given the attention he deserves in the pop culture sphere? People have begun taking him for granted. It’s pretty much a given that he’ll be in movies for the foreseeable future, so people don’t feel like there’s any point in emphasizing his latest role as a side character or recognizing him on the street. We’ve become so complacent with the idea of Stanley Tucci in our peripheral vision that we aren’t cherishing him the way he deserves.

The next time you see him in anything at all, think about how many times you’ve seen him and taken him for granted. Separate yourself from the flock and take a minute to appreciate Stanley Tucci.

When The Devil Wears Prada 2 was announced, many people celebrated the announcement of a sequel to a beloved movie.
