After seeing Project Hail Mary, I walked out of the theatre in genuine shock. I didn’t even realize three hours had magically passed since we arrived. I walked into the movie with a “glass half-empty” perspective, ready to roll my eyes. “Oh look, it’s Ryan Gosling and a cute alien thing being dumb haha,” is what I said to myself. I maintained that mindset for half an hour before it quickly vanished.

I bet you’re thinking right now, “CC, is it really that good?” Trust me when I say it is. The movie is based on the novel by Andy Weir published in May of 2021, and I’ve already purchased it (as should you after you watch this movie). Project Hail Mary alternates between two timelines. We see Ryland Grace, portrayed by Ryan Gosling, waking up in space, not sure how he got there and him prior to the trip, seemingly unaware of it. You learn what’s happening as he does which allows you to immerse yourself in the film. You really get to dive into his perspective.

Each character has depth to them, and none of the characters are exactly dislikeable. You could argue that that is unrealistic, but I actually find it refreshing. In the past couple of decades, films always seem to have an over-the-top antagonist just for the audience to throw their hatred towards. To me, it’s often unnecessary when telling a story. T

Overall, this movie is a perfect balance of heart-wrenching and funny. It quite literally had me crying, laughing, and sprinting to the bathroom and back not to miss anything. The cinematography was beautiful, and my only regret is that every few minutes, I found myself thinking “Gosh, I wish I’d seen this in Imax.” The movie is made for Imax and I can’t exaggerate enough how much I regret not viewing it as intended. This movie is exactly what I would describe as a “movie theatre movie.” I imagine it would be just as entertaining to view at home but nowhere near as life changing. This might sound extremely dramatised, but it’s really just urgency with which I feel everyone should go experience this gorgeous movie experience. The sound and the breathtaking wide shots in a theatre is where you’ll feel connected to all the people around you, wondering if everyone else is feeling what you’re feeling.

I can’t remember the last time I was so genuinely engrossed in a movie that I didn’t check the time at least once.
