Nationwide, 2026 is shaping up to be even worse than 2025. As of the end of February, there are over 1,100 cases spread out over more than 25 states, which puts us at half the total for 2025 in a sixth of the time. In April, the Pan American Health Organization plans to convene and determine if measles can no longer be considered eradicated in the U.S., as it has been since 2000.

This sharp increase in measles cases is largely due to a lack of vaccination. Outbreaks, such as the one in South Carolina, are primarily concentrated in communities with lower immunization rates, and the vast majority of infected did not receive the MMR (a standard immunization that combines the treatments for mumps, measles, and rubella into one shot) vaccine. Both unvaccinated adults and children are highly susceptible to debilitating infection—3 out of every 1,000 children who contract measles die, and even more suffer from life-long complications caused by the illness.

If you are unvaccinated, it is highly recommended that you quarantine if exposed to the virus. It spreads through respiratory droplets, and can remain in the air or on surfaces for up to two hours. Measles symptoms typically take 1-3 weeks to present, which means a 21-day quarantine. Symptoms include high fever, runny nose, cough, and red, watery eyes. If you are vaccinated but have been exposed, quarantine is not needed, but you should monitor any possible symptoms carefully. This is a highly contagious and dangerous disease. Health officials recommend seeking vaccination if you have not already received it.

Early in February, UW Madison reported that a student had contracted measles.
