Whilst the show adaptation of volumes one through four were beloved by many, many in the community criticized the visuals for appearing too bland and muted. Despite Fujimoto never having expressed gripes with the adaptation, the initial director, Ryu Nakahama, left the production in November of 2023. After the status of Chainsaw Man’s anime remained unclear for a solid month, MAPPA eventually showcased a teaser trailer for what was to come at Jump Festa 2023.

Set to adapt the second half of volume five and all of volume six, Chainsaw Man: Reze Arc was officially announced. Though a release date wouldn’t be revealed until over a year later, plans for the adaptation were officially afloat once more. A full length trailer for the film would eventually release at Jump Festa 2024 the following year. With a drastic difference in visual style, director Tatsuya Yoshihara aimed to capture a vision closer to that of Fujimoto’s original manga covers. In contrast to Nakahama, fans of Chainsaw Man took a liking to Yoshihara’s adaptation of the work.

Despite an initially rocky production, the film went on to be recognized as “emotionally resonant” and “undeniably funny” by critics and readers alike. With a closer appearance to the style expressed through Fujimoto’s older color illustrations, Chainsaw Man: Reze Arc captures the bright and gruesome nature of its source material in a way that even fans of Nakahama’s original vision will love. It’s yet to be revealed if Yoshihara will continue to work with MAPPA on adapting volumes seven through twenty-two. Many readers are worried that the sheer scope of what’s yet to be adapted may cause issues behind the scenes. However, enough traction has gathered for the series thus far for further episodes and films to be predicted as successful.

Serialized in Shueisha’s Shonen Jump magazine, the fifth and sixth volumes of Tatsuki Fujimoto’s Chainsaw Man have been considered fan favorites ever since their initial release.
